Paulina María Gabaldon Thompson

Paulina María Gabaldon Thompson, of Long Beach, California, died on June 23, 2025, at her home, with her family by her side, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Paulina will be dearly remembered for her radiant smile reflecting her joyful life; a life filled with treasured friendships, close family ties, and a deep love and devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren. Paulina was born in Merida, Venezuela to Gustavo Gabaldon and Graciela Francisca Uncein, later moving to Maracaibo where she was raised together with her two brothers and sister. She attended high school at Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach, Florida. Paulina’s uncle set her up on a blind date with Neal Barry Thompson, Jr. and the two later married in Maracaibo in 1967. The couple settled in Long Beach in 1968 to raise their family.

A Long Beach resident for over 56 years, Paulina was actively involved in her community as a dedicated member of Junior League of Long Beach, National Charity League, St. Bartholomew, and Naples Garden Club. Beyond these commitments, she found joy in socializing with family, friends and neighbors, and was a familiar sight, happily walking her dog, Bailey, multiple times a day.

Paulina was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Barry Thompson, Jr., in 2014 and her brothers Federico Gabaldon and Rafael Gabaldon. She is survived by her son, Neal (Tracy) Thompson; her daughter, Teresa (Austin) Thomas; her five grandchildren; and her sister, Graciela Francisca Gabaldon Araujo.

A funeral mass for Paulina Thompson will be held on July 12th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. Donations may be made to John Tracy Center (JTC.org). JTC provides parent-centered services to children with hearing loss, offering families hope, guidance, and encouragement.
