Patricia Windham Stanyo passed away on June 17th in Long Beach, California, at the age of 83. She was born August 20, 1941 in Mississippi. At age two, she moved with her parents to Long Beach—the city she loved and lived in her whole life. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and California State University, Long Beach. Immediately after graduation, Patricia took a job with the Los Angeles School District and remained dedicated to teaching and working toward improving education for all students for approximately 43 years until her retirement. She continued to be an active advocate in the school district and many community organizations.
Patricia developed some health issues over the years and was dealing with mobility issues. Still, even as she became more wheelchair-bound, it did not stop her from continuing to work with her many organizations. Patricia developed some more serious issues in early February, sending her to the hospital for surgery and a very long recovery. After several months, she was happy to return to her assisted living.
Prior to February, she was still very active with her UTLA, CLUW, AFT, CARA and other union work, along with the Long Beach Democratic Club and the Gray Panthers. Patricia was a single mother who raised three daughters. During the last several years, Patricia truly enjoyed spending time with her daughters and granddaughter. Patricia also spent time with many of the residents where she lived and remained active, participating in daily exercises and activities such as card and board games. She loved staying active.
Patricia is survived by her two daughters, Stacy Stanyo and Darcy Stanyo, and her granddaughter, Nina Stanyo. Patricia is preceded in death by her daughter, Romney Stanyo. The family is devastated by this sudden loss and is taking this difficult time to grieve in private. There will be a Celebration of Life on August 5, 2025.
