Elisabeth “Lisa” McMahon Moore

Elisabeth McMahon Moore, 75, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, at her home in Long Beach, California. Lisa was born on June 23, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan.

A lifelong learner with a heart for service, Lisa’s academic journey was marked by a deep commitment to the nursing profession. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Detroit, followed by both a Bachelor of Science and her Registered Nurse (RN) designation from Saint Louis University. She later returned to her Michigan roots to complete her Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Michigan.

Lisa moved to Southern California in 1982, where she dedicated her career to supporting children with unique needs. As a special education nurse for Los Angeles County, she provided medical expertise, steady guidance, and a compassionate presence for students and their families for many years.

Lisa was a woman of deep conviction and active engagement. She was a cornerstone of her Unitarian Church community, where she found fellowship and a shared commitment to social justice. A fierce advocate for women’s rights, she believed in a more equitable world and worked to see it realized.

Her love for the Long Beach community was most visible in her dedication to literacy. Through her involvement with the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library, she helped ensure that the joy of reading was accessible to all. At home, Lisa’s life was enriched by her beloved dogs, who were her constant and cherished companions.

Lisa was a sports enthusiast whose loyalty to her teams never wavered, no matter how many miles she was from Michigan. She lived for Fall Saturdays watching Michigan Wolverine football, and she remained a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons. Above all, her favorite “home team” was her family; she found immense joy in heading to the pool to watch her son Brendan coach his water polo teams, cheering from the stands with the same pride she had for her beloved Wolverines.

Lisa was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and James; her brother, Dan; her brother-in-law, Pollard; and her sister-in-law, Patricia. Her legacy of kindness and advocacy continues through those she loved most. She is survived by her son, Brendan, and her daughter-in-law, Diana; her sister, Mary; and her brothers, Hugh and Jim. She will be remembered by them, and by the many students and colleagues she touched throughout her career, for her sharp intellect and her unwavering spirit.

ln lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lisa’s name to The Friends of the Library, Long Beach, California (lbplfriends.org), Planned Parenthood or an animal shelter of your choice.
