Alan Bruce Ice

     Alan will be remembered as a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend—a man defined by his devotion to family, his quiet sense of humor, and a lifelong commitment to service. He had a deep love of reading, and some of his fondest moments were spent sharing books and stories with his children, grandsons, nieces, and nephews.

     Alan was born in Compton, California to Archie Ice and Gladys (Jones) Ice. He graduated from North High School in 1963 and Compton College in June 1965 with an Associate of Arts degree. He then attended UCLA before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966.

     Alan began his military career in 1966 with basic training, advanced infantry training, and Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle) and Expert Badge (Auto-Rifle). He was commissioned Second Lieutenant on August 10, 1967 into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Alan was stationed in South Korea, where he met the mother of his children. A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, he retired as a Major.

     In September 1970, Alan began his training at the police academy. He joined the Long Beach Police Department as an officer in 1971, retiring in 1995 as a Police Corporal after 24 years of service. Alan carried the same discipline and integrity from his years of service into every part of his life, and into how he loved and cared for his family.

     As a proud and faithful member of Huntington Beach Masonic Lodge #380, he was initiated and Entered Apprentice on March 21, 1973; passed to Fellow Craft on June 17, 1981, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on September 9, 1981. As a Master Mason, Brother Ice served the “Little Lodge by the Sea” in various officer seats through Junior Warden. He was also a Scottish Rite Mason with the Valley of Long Beach, a community he cherished deeply.

     Alan was preceded in death by his brothers Robert and George Ice, and sisters Barbara McCoy and Lorena Meagher; nephew Jonathon Ice and niece Michele McCoy. He is survived by his former wife, Sung Ja Ice; daughters Elisa Ice and Luciana Ice; daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Joseph Nesci; daughter Susanne and son-in-law Brendan Dunnigan; and daughter Julia Ice; two grandsons, Dylan and Devin Dunnigan, who cherished the stories and books he shared with them; sister Brenda Requisio; sister-in-law Jane Ice; nieces Nancy Jones, Alison McCoy, Valyrie Ice, and Deborah Meagher; nephews Dennis and Danny Meagher and Joe McCoy; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

     Alan’s love for his family, his community, and his country will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family requests that donations be made to the following organization or one of your own choosing:
